Default 4x4 issue 2005 Lariat 5.4 3v

Good evening fellas,

I actually use my 4x4 beach, hunting, job sites in the mud etc... Recently wanted to check it before a beach trip and no joy. The 4x4 hi light hasn't worked in years but 4 lo has. The system always functioned as it should. Last week put the switch into 4 hi and nothing happens, shifted into neutral and put the switch to 4 lo and nothing happened. Put the Forscan tool on it and I have C1979 and P1867. Changed the vacuum solenoid and shift motor with new and still no 4x4. What am I missing? Hunting season is 4 months away so I have a little time.

I think if it were my truck what I would try is taking the shift motor off and putting a crescent wrench tightly on the shift shaft and then use another adjustable wrench clamped onto the first one to turn try to gently wiggle the rod back and forth and see if maybe its just stuck. If you get movement I would work it back and forth a few times and see if you can get it freed up. While you have the motor unbolted have a helper turn the **** while you observe the motor and see if it actually actuates like it should. When done return the **** to its original position and reinstall the motor.
Just because the motor is new, don't assume that it is good.

sounds like a power problem with open circuits ... but, yeah you can verify the shift lever actually moves.

That's a good idea, needsmoarturbo, I have been rebuilding motors since I was a kid but this is my first 4 wheel and first time having a problem in 10 years. When it stops raining Ill jump/slide under the truck and do that.

Probably not the problem but on my truck your foot has to be on the brake pedal to shift t case.

Angry

OK transfer case is good, all fuses and realys are good, I have great vacuum at the hubs. I found the axle nut a little tight, loosened it and the hubs both retract for freewheel but I still have no 4x4. Again new solenoid, ne shift motor, all fuses good and solid vacuum. What the hell am I missing? Could the PCM be bad. Codes are C1979 and P1867
