Default Phasers? Help!

OK, I’ve searched the cam phaser issue and also the stalling post and haven’t found any symptoms like mine.

Cold start seems fine, only normal noise at cold start. Truck runs normally all the time except frequently, may be every 3-4 stops or may not do it at all, when I stop at a light truck will start rattling and idle down to 4-500 rpms. If I let it continue, it will eventually stall. If I kick it to neutral and rev it up to 1000+ motor will idle normally. This will also happen in reverse occasionally. It’s been doing this for a few months now.

I’ve taken it to a couple of different Ford Techs, one said phasers, the other said tensioners and guides.

2 codes pop up, #2 bank cam sensor and timing retarded. The engine does not make unusual noises except during this problem. It runs normally at all other times, maybe have lost 1 mpg since this has started. If I run it on the interstate, it seems to be more common when I come to stop at exit ramp.

The truck is an 04 150 4x4 5.4 Screw with 140000 miles. Every thing I have read seems to say that when the phasers/tensioners go, it is a steady problem, not intermittent?

Any ideas?
Thanks
Loye

Have you looked into the VCT Solenoids. Much easier fix. They control the oil flow that controls the phasers and determines the cam positions.

Yea if the cam phasers and lashers don't do the trick change the VCT's...I have a 04 Lariat SuperCrew 5.4 and that was its problem. Might I suggest not only buying the VCT but also the cast of metal that the oil flows through to it...can't remember what it's called. And yes you can check the VCT's, they're supposed to read between 5 and 15 ohms I think(don't quote me) but double check. But they can test out fine and still be bad, hence replacing that cast of metal too

Yea and with 140,000 (mine has 144) on your truck the chances of something clogging up those passageways is pretty substantial if the problem already points to them so spend the extra $30 I think it is, and get that casting...you'll have to take the valve covers off but it's worth it for the peace of mind knowing that there is nothing in the oil passageways.
