Mine was painted to begin with but it was starting to chip and flake off so I used an electric drill with rough metal spinning wheel on it to scuff the remaining paint up real good. I then used oil remover to clean it up and then put a few coats of Duplicolor bed liner on it, the spray can kind.

It's holding up really good. I did my wheel wells with it and it's taken plenty of abuse and still looks great, a buddy actually did his wheels with this stuff and it looked great. I did roughly 4 coats, it took a little patience to get the coats even.

i think paint will hold up just fine if its done right, the only thing it will have to survive is riding in the back of my truck which shouldnt be that bad, i dont beat on my toolbox and i usually dont haul much in my bed, so it should be fine if the prep is good
