I'm curious to the process of painting it also. I'll likely get regular diamond plate toolbox, but in the future might paint it black if I get black rims..

I'll keep an eye on this thread.

I too am interested in this process.

My guess would be clean it, sand it, prime it, then a few coats of paint.

At this time though I am leaning towards having the rino liner or line x fella spray it down. That a way if it chips, they will fix it.

What do ya think? $50 to have it sprayed down?

I am going to call and get a quote.

A new black USW tool box is around $400. A used one on Craigs list is about $125 -$200 but who knows what condition it is in.

When painting anything the prep work is 90% of the job. I painted my house about 8 months ago and spent a lot of time sanding, cleaning, etc and it came out great. Just prep it right and it will come out awesome.

Use a good quality paint, the money saved on cheap paint will not be worth it. Krylon is a good priced quality brand. But maybe there is a more durable brand out there, since it is going to be used on a tool box.

I figured prep will take the longest. I don't have a power sander and sanding diamond plate by hand will take some time.

On top of that I don't know how much to sand or what grain to use.

HOWEVER, Lets do a quick cost analysis to see where we are...

Sand paper $5
Cleaner to remove oil, metal and excessive sweat from sanding by hand $10
Tape: $5
Primer $20
Paint $25
Beer: $20
TOTAL $85??

PLUS a afternoon of the wife nagging me. How much is THAT worth? Heck, I will be in the hole if I do it myself...
