P0340 Code. Replaced sensor, same problem
#31
None of you are correct. The problem lies in the seal blown out on the timing chain tensioners. The plastic seals go bad, and then you loose oil pressure to the cam phasers. Replace the plastic tensioners with the cop car iron ones, and you'll never have the problem again.

my fix for this problem
Hi guys im new to this site and was having the same problem. i have an 04 f150 3V 5.4l and i was throughing a p0340 code, i changed the CPS and still had the same problem, missing really bad, it also seemed to run great in limp mode with both the CPS disconnected. so i pulled the timing cover (not fun!) and found that the timing guide on the passenger side had disintegrated, after looking at it a bit more i found that the timing was off by one tooth on the crank gear(i suspect a piece of the guide got wedged between the chain and gear and after the rotation left the chain off one tooth), even though the timing makes were still lined up on the cam phaser. i replaced the guide and tensioner on the passenger side and relined up the timing on the crank and fixed the problem! now it runs like new again. i just did a head job on it less than a year ago so i didnt change the chains again but i did pull the pan and the get all the plastic junk out of it and change the oil pump since i was that far anyways. i hope this gives you guys something to look at as a possible fix.

0340 issue is at low idle only
2004 5.4 170k
I have been reading this thread and I really can't tell if it is the same issue as mine.
I have a 0340.
I had phaser, chains, tensioners, guides, vct valves changed out.
Now 2 months after all that I get a 340 code. At idle it wants to stall but doesn't the. Starts knocking. Give it gas goes back to normal. Runs good while driving.
Also at idle computer says cams are off sync +\- 3

Repair p0340 code on f150
04' 5.4L with 59k miles
I have a plaguing problem. Im getting a p0340 code which is the bank 1(passenger side??) CPT sensor. I've replaced it and still I have a rough idling issue and sometimes it will stall while at a light?
Am I over looking something? It's the only code that comes up and the VCT's have been replaced as well as a new throttle body and TPS.
Is there a way to check the CPT with a DVOM to confirm it is well? If it is what should I check next?
Please help!
Thank you very much

I ran into the same issue went through the same avenues
Changed the sensors with no change .changed alternator. Still nothing. Finally decided to check timing chains the timing chain guide was broken. So installed new timing set but decided to lock out cam phasers. And reprogram ecm with cams locked. This fixed the issue and truck runs better than ever.

Hey there. thanks for the info. I have the same problem, but with a 2007 4.6L (engine is Romeo built in 2004) without solenoids. Have done everything I can... all sensors tested and swapped more than once, timing and phasers changed, havent done a throttle body but still have a p0340. Tell me about the phaser lock out and reprogramming. Where did you get the ecm reprogrammed? Im at the end of my rope and really want to keep the truck. It runs perfectly but I cant get rid of the p0340. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Safer to use water to test for intake vacuum leaks. Use a water bottle with a hole in the cap and squirt the water at suspect areas. With a large leak, the engine will stumble due to water ingestion. For a small leak, the water will make the leak even smaller and it will make a hissing sound because of the increased velocity of air passing around the water and into the leak area. Works for me.
