Still have my 2005 STX 4.2. It's been great to me. 256K on it's original engine and transmission. I got it with 86K, and it has never given me any trouble.
The Mustang is also a great one. Since I seem to steer towards the 6'ers, I bought a 2011 with the 3.7. I've installed a turbo on it, and it's fun to pull up next to the 5.0's and give it a whirl!
I totally respect the V8's; there's no replacement for displacement. If/when I can afford a Boss, I plan to purchase a clean used one. Since I like to track the Mustang once or twice a month, the Boss is what I'd love to get my hands on. With a little work, the 3.7 can be made to run up there with the big boys. However, with the same budget, I know I could make a killer 5.0.
it just takes money. Time I have plenty of.

Wow 256 on the 4.2... My 02 4.2 has around 180k... And my 08 had 106k.... I even run mine pretty hard towing.... I run both extended oil changes... The 08 does use a quart within 4000 miles... And has for along time.. I think it is leaking somewhere... Its used over a quart

Yea, this truck just can't seem to leave my ownership. My son "borrows" it from time to time, and gets complemented on it's condition. The dark stone paint is still in excellent condition. The fake Roush hood scoop gives the STX body a bit of sportyness I suppose. My son's black lab ("duke") loves it too.
I guess I'll be handing it off soon to the son and buying one of the new 2015 F150's. can't decide if I want that 3.7 V6 (I seem to have a passion for V6's), or if I want to step up to big boy territory and buy a V8. I want to go back to doing some camping again, so a pull behind trailer is in the plans.

yeah sorry for your loss.
THe Boss would be a great car to have. I raced a brand new one a few times at the track and it held it's own pretty good against my 10.5 @ 126 86 mustang with a 410 windsor.
THe 15 trucks are going to be pretty cool, either one would be a good choice
