I may have just had an epiphany....or I may be an idiot....but for removing manifold studs on the 5.4....couldn't you slide a stubby socket over the stud....then slide a washer over the stud so it was sitting on the socket....then thread on a left handed flanged nut? Wouldn't tightening the nut pull the stud out? Correct me if I'm wrong...and I probably am....but I just envisioned a process similar to the Lisle puller tool and thought maybe it could work...

sounds like it would work well but I'm pretty sure the studs going into the engine are threaded so you wouldn't be able to just pull them strait out would you?

no i mean by tightening down the left hand nut....the stud would back itself out through the nut as a result of the reverse thread...I think.

actually ya that makes sense. I think the trick would just be having the stud not be too rusted and short

Wouldn't the threads on the bolt need to be reverse threaded as well? Otherwise you have mismatching threads, square stick in a round hole kind of thing.

Maybe I'm just confusing myself...you can do this with two stacked nuts, they push against each other

If you can get two nuts on there, and tightened against each other while also lined up so you can get a ratchet on both... I think you would have a winner!
