One piece rear drive shaft: necessary to lube slip yoke?
Hey guys,
I'm getting the common drivetrain clunk when accelerating from a stop. I dropped the forward driveshaft and lubed the slip yoke but the clunk is still there. I have a one-piece rear driveshaft and was wondering if the TSB is applicable to the one price rear shaft? I see in the service manual there is a slip yoke but its not inside a rubber boot and seems more like a sealed unit. Any ideas?

I a not sure about the TSB but the rear shaft is probably the culprit. Are you saying your front shaft is 2 parts, not sure I follow that. I do no the rear shaft will give you the clunk and the greasing of it will make it go away for a period of time. I did mine a couple months ago and it went away, however I do hear it coming back some times.
Mine didnt strart until it was puleed the second time for a tranny install and the front tranny seal leaked and it had to come back out again. I think they did not mark the shaft and it was put in a different position. I think it gets a little wear on the yoke or either the output shaft yoke of the tranfer case. I would also say if you grease it there and it stops the noise at least you no where the sound is coming from.

I just went by the pic in his sig. thinking 4x4. He stated front as in the front shaft for the front wheel drive. I am not aware of them being two peice, I am going to have to look at it now that we are talking about it but mine is a solid shaft with two universals no slip yoke as you would have on the rear.

I don't have my truck here, but isn't there a rubber "bellows" on the front shaft? I think there is some type of slip joint in there?

This is for a different model year, but I think it is designed the same way for our trucks:
And that shaft is pretty pricey, even from a discount supplier like Tasca! $515.28 http://www.tascaparts.com/parts/2005...=DRIVE%20SHAFT
