Default older car with less miles vs. newer one with more miles

Is it better to buy an older truck with less miles or a newer one with more miles, if the cost is about the same? 2002 vs. 2004. Edmunds, KBB, NADA all say the newer vehicle is worth more,(actually if the 02 wasn't absolutely loaded it wouldn't be close) but which is the better buy long term? (whichever I choose I will run till the wheels fall off) 02 has 68k, 04 has 96k. Thoughts?

Look at the 2 body styles I think you will be able to make your own choice. They are a lot different.

Yep... I don't mind either style, but I do no like the bed on the 00-03 supercrew....

Also, the 5.4L engine changed to 3volt also!

Older model IMHO. I went thru the same scenario as you. I found no cam phasers, and No special spark plugs on the older one. I like "simpler" when planning on keeping one till the wheels fall off. I am also not a big fan of the aluminum front suspension they had on those models. I like the iron front suspension.

But to be fair, the crash test on the newer one is better. And I imagine that it has a bit more power. Not anything like "Wow" like some make it seem (I have driven both), but it's there. Cam phasers and 3V heads do that for you. Both ought to be good trucks. My 01 has given me "zilch" problems. Older isn't always "worse".

Get the older, lower mile truck. The big diff. is the newer one hasn't depreciated as much as the older one. The '02 was well engineered and tried and true. The '04 was the first year of that style, with all the issues that come with a first year vehicle.
The newer one gives a few more bells and whistles and a little more 'style'.
Save your money and spend it on mods for the '02 instead of repairs on the '04.
Or wait a little and get a '06 or '07. Might not have to wait long. Lots of people out of work and selling cheap.
