Default Oil types

I change my own oil in both of my trucks. An '06 F-150 and an '80 Bronco. The F-150 manf specs say it needs 5W20. How much does it matter if you sway from what the manf recommends? I'm in Arizona so obviously location and climate dictate what you use. Been thinking about trying that snythetic Royal Purple..

A lot really depends on weather and location as you said. Obviously winter here in Ohio is going to be rather different then winter in Arizona. I've experimented with a few different types and seems 5w 20 seems best but not really noticable different.

I use syn Royal Purple in the Mustang and it's good stuff..... :-)

I put 5w30 in my truck and its fine. I just used cheap Walmart Supertech oil.
So far only one oil change since Ive owned the truck.

i would stick to the motorcraft oil they recommend for it, it's cheap and walmart sells the oil and filters, not even 20 bucks for 7 quarts and a filter.

I agree with atom.I stick with the motorcraft 5w-20&change every 5k miles.Ive never been comfortable letting oil go above 5k.Old school here.

Man, like you said location and climate dictate what to use. Like most folks around here I use 10W-30. It's really the only choice for Texas. The 5W-20 doesn't last at all. I've always been a Castrol man myself. I am running that Castrol Syntec 10W-30 right now, but when my oil change comes up in 1,200 miles I am switching back to my Dino-juice. This synthetic costs wayyyyy too much to justify me using it in daily driving. It doesn't seem that much different than Castrol GTX and my mileage went DOWN when I started running it.
