Default Oil filter by VIN?

Im trying to get a replacement oil filter. Everywhere list 2 different filters but no way of differentiating the 2. Was goint to compare it to mine but the oil was changed when I got the truck and I want to be positive they used the correct one also. Not sure of the difference (other than height). Can anyone point me in the right direction? Based off the vin? Which letter/number?

Your owner's manual should list one part number for a 4.2L (FL-400-S) and another for a 4.6L and 5.4L (FL-820-S).

One is skinny, one is fat. I believe they both mount the same. I used the wider one because that is what was on the trucks, I think it was 800 something.

I just checked your garage and you have a 5.4L.

Little bit better answer than mine, shotgun, haha.

I had to look it up online on the forum while I was standing in the automotive section of Walmart getting the stuff for my first oil change because the computer was showing both filters for the 5.4.

No worries!

Hope you're having better luck than me getting filters and oil at Wally World.

I must live in Ford land because everytime I go they're out of the filters...And most of the time all they have is 1 qt containers of 5w20 semi-syn.

Back to the regularly scheduled thread...

I made the mistake of buying the wrong one and not realizing it until I had already drained the oil the first time I changed it.
The book at Walmart lists two for 5.4's.

Its a short, fat filter and not the taller thinner one.

Fram PH2 or Supertech ST2. I use the Supertech filters.

Why the two different listings in all the books? I read somewhere that the filters on some of these have backflow through the filters and buying the wrong one WILL cause damage? There were no owners manuals with the truck when I bought it (used). Im afraid the wrong one will work but not correctly and eventually cause engine damage. The filter thats on it now seems ok but has only been on for 1200 miles. I just want to get it done on my watch so I know its right. If only 1 will work (physically fit on the truck) then great. Just looking for a little reassurance before doing it.

If you want a manual, look at my signature.

Buy a Motorcraft filter, FL-820-S, and you wont have to worry.

You're welcome!
