oil change question
#12
Just as NHSD said, why spend extra on an expensive oil and still change it out at 3k or even 5k miles?? Just doesn't make sense. Stay with regular oil and it works just as well for 3k miles.
I just switched to Mobil 1 5W20, with a Purolator PureOne filter. I intend to change my oil again at between 7500 to 10000 miles.
I'm used to German engines, full synthetic oil, change my oil once a year or 10000 miles. Actually some manufacturers recommend longer than 10000 miles! However, it really depends on how you drive too.

Oil change When?
16,000 miles
10,000 miles
Once a year?
Have you guy's looked at the color of your oil on the dipstick or when you drain it?
If you change your oils often enough the color should be close the color of the new oil.
As oil breaks down it will darken, as engine deposits get into the oil it will darken.
Now this is my opinion: Do what you want!
You can't go wrong by changing your oils often rather than not.
The recommended oil viscosity is set by the manufacturer, 5w20. Stay with it! But I bet that the requirement changes for extreme conditions
Freezing winter (cold extreme) (Mohave desert in the summer time) heat extreme
Over the years the best choice has been every 3000 miles or 3 months. Use the basic good oil use the basic rules 3000 or 3 months. Play it safe!
Ever since Mobil 1 and synthetics came into the picture time and mileage has changed.
I don’t care what they say. If I use a full synthetic I won’t go past 5000 miles nor will I go past 6 months. At the very least there could still be some type of deposits that enter the oil from engine wear. . Or from engine combustion
In my mind synthetic oil lubricates the motor better. The engine should have less wear over the driven mileage. As far as better fuel economy, more power ????? I really don’t know.
Synthetic is not a good break-in oil … at least in my mind
Just remember those that have the 5.4 and the spark plug problems even though the plug should go 100,000 miles LOL … NOT! It’s not that the plug wears out. It’s the head that is the issue along with the breakaway plugs.
It’s the same with the oil. The synthetic may still lubricate at 10,000 miles but did they mention what the s@#t (eng deposits)in the oil is going to do? NO!
I change mine just in case. You guys do what you want.

Oil change frequency depends on a large number of factors...
If you ran your truck for (theoretically) 5000 miles straight - without stopping - in a clean environment, your oil would still provide protection for a LOT longer. Maybe 12000 or more miles without the oil breaking a sweat.
If you ran your truck for 5000 miles in dusty conditions or stop and go traffic through 1000 warm up cycles while pulling a load - guess what, your oil will be loaded and full of acids. It will be black and smell "old" and "varnishy". It will need to be changed.
Todays engines are amazingly clean compared to what we were all used to. The 5.4 (maybe 4.6 also?) holds close to 7 litres of oil - that alone will add to the life cycle per change.
In my service - which is fairly light duty because I do not tow anything and I do not use the truck for work. A standard 5W-20 still looks pretty good at 5000 miles. It's not perfectly clear for sure but I would have no problem running up additional miles without panicking.

[quote=Quatsino;194760]Oil change frequency depends on a large number of factors...
This is a true example. It really happened, A Volvo 240 4cyl around 4 years old and out of warranty. This customer had done all the scheduled Maintenances. He had all the records to prove it
I had a customer with a seized camshaft 16,000 miles. Upon pulling the Valve cover to see why his t-belt failed so early. I found that the inside of the engine was caked with sludge. The oil journals were plugged and the cam was seized to poor oil flow.
I couldn’t understand why? After talking to the customer at length I discovered why! His work was only 6 miles from his house. He only used this car for work. The oil never heated up properly. He followed the 7500 mile intervals for oil change. Two things could have saved his motor.
The first and most important was to change his oil more often by a time schedule and not by his mileage.
Second and just as important. Take the car out for a distance drive once in a while. Get the engine oil fully warmed up.
Again for all you service guys out there this is my experience and my opinion.

I'm sure that Ford has long forgot about me now that I'm at 80,000 miles and I plan to keep my truck to at least 200,000 miles. so I think that the little extra money is nothing in the long run. With all the oil driven parts in this motor! just my 2 cents!

I have a question. I have an 07 Lariat 5.4Flex 4X4. Does the time between oil changes realy matter with todays oils? I did the 1st oils change at 3000 through Ford, and at 6000 went to Mobil1 5W20. Now I change it every 5000. I have never realy worried about the time between oil changes just the miles. Only mod is a AirAid CAI I put on while I was on R&R. I did have Ford do my 15000 mile service. I had them put in my Mobil1 though.
