I burn about a quart every 3,000 miles. 120,000 on truck now, been burning that much when I bought it with 80,000.

Yea, mine goes through about a quart every 3 to 5 thousand; I tow a camper occasionally, so I keep tabs on the oil weekly.

I guess they were afraid of breaking the fuel filter but I would get that taken care of too considering the other fluids looked bad

Get it running good, replace all filters and fluids. As most of the time you are buying from someone you don't know and you do not know the maintenance history on it. But anyway, it could be leaking oil. Do you notice that it drips any after it sits for a little?
I totally agree. This was its first oil change and I decided to have almost all fluids changed. And yes I know that sounds bad, and you're right. I should have checked it completely over. I bought it from a ASE certified mechanic, in the pouring rain/sleet at 32° degrees. It was rushed and getting dark. I shoulda been more thorough. And I also agree with your statement of getting the truck to a perfect running and operating condition before "modding" it. It's what I've been doing aside from fixing the dummy-dim lights.

I made them show me everything they were telling me, and even made them take me in the pit. I'm not gullible, or stupid. I know the con jobs they pull, this place seemed pretty stand-up.

It was a rushed and VERY cold purchase from a certified mechanic, I figure I could get away with not checking all of the fluids, but I guess I was wrong.

I will check my oil regularly, however I am not okay with my truck burning, or to use the nice term, "using" oil. If that is the case it will be in the shop the next week to see what can be done to fix "using".

When I was looking at trucks to buy, I found one (2011 F150) with at least two handfuls of sand in the airbox. I passed on that one.
