Odd recommendation from dealer today (Coil pack and plugs)
Hi All, I took my 2007 5.4L F150 to Ford today for a strange clunk around 40mph. Their official diagnosis was that multiple spark plugs and coil packs were failing intermittently. I get that coil packs are a known issue and that an engine miss might feel like a drivetrain problem.
What I don't get is that they wanted to change both my coil packs and plugs for a cost of $1467.00. It is especially odd they would recommend new plugs since mine only have 35K. I proactively had Ford change my plugs at 77K. I'm now at 112K I'm having a hard time believing my plugs are failing. The issue is not bad yet so I told them thank you and picked up my truck. My guess is that they wanted to shotgun replace everything (coils and plugs) for the extra revenue and because it would definitely cure the problem albeit overkill.
Does this sound suspect to any of you? I may buy some Accel or MSD coils from Summit Racing and install myself as a first step.
Thank you,
John

Both coil packs? You have 8 coils, one on each plug.

Thanks for the recommendation. I went ahead and purchased the MSD 82438 Blaster Coil-on-Plug set. Do you think I should change out the SP515 plugs even if they just have 35K miles?

He said both my coil packs and plugs, not both coil packs. I'm unaware that a bad coil or plug would cause a clunk. People here say to stick with Motorcraft plugs and coils but how did they come to the conclusion that it was one or both of them? I would do them myself which should cost you in the $400 plus range for all new plugs and coils from Motorcraft

You can get 8 of those SP515 for $72, then the MSD's for $184 for a total of $256 vs the dealers $1,467. I know which I would do.
