so far 5w-30 hasnt made a difference. New solenoids I am putting in tomorrow, but I am 99% sure the noise will stay the same, but what the hell I'll give it a shot

Hope you have a 04, 05 or 06. 07 and 08 you have to remove the valve covers to replace the VCT solenoids.

Even on 06, you dont have to remove valvr covers aslong as u get a new vct gasket or make sure you dont ruin old one

Be easier for you to find "the final cam phaser thread" it walks through the whole thing.

Well put the new solenoids in last night, like everyone said pretty easy job. Seals are a pain, and I was paranoid of dropping junk in the motor so I was constantly shop vacuuming stuff. I didn't move the power steering bracket. Unfortunately nothing changed with my sound, so I tried the 5w30 with new vct solenoids and it stayed the same. I wasn't really expecting a difference but wanted to try it. So now I'll just see if the noise stays the same or gets any better...my truck runs great anyway.

Yeah, that is what I said......

To the OP, sounds like your phasers are bad. Sorry to hear.

yeah tough to say, tick has always been there. Time to either take it in and get a opinion or send it down the road I guess.

That's what I did with mine a long time ago -- sent it on down the road... BUT it was with ME in the driver's seat. It now has > 205k and still ticks and sounds like a diesel (but runs good - idles good - and pulls good). To all those guys who ask me "_What's_ wrong with your truck" -- .
