How would you upgrade it? Just heavier gears?

I am in need of a tranny too, so i've been calling around, and there is a shop here in utah that knows that these trannies always go out, so they have shells that they have rebuilt with all aftermarket parts internally including a new torque converter and a shift kit for 1700 bux. Not including installation of course. But thats by far the best deal I've come across. I'm sure there is someone local to you guys that will rebuild for ya.

No, in the RGV. It is a mechanic in Edinburg TX. He is good and his prices are reasonable. He also gave me a 1 year warranty on his work. Other places they only give you about 3 months.

I payed ford $3500 to put in a remanufactured one, 3 year unlimited warranty.
AAMCO wanted $1700 for a rebuild and it only came with a one year/ 12k mile warranty. My next vehicle WILL be a manual, I officially hate automatics, way to much to go wrong, and too sensitive.

Had my old 96 exploder's rebuilt with an HD upgrade from cotman. $1200 back in 04 or 05. They have great warranty on their work too. 6 months after rebuild it went out again, tranny fluid all over driveway. They came get it, cleaned driveway with out asking, saw my boat in the process. I got a phone call, asking if I pulled that boat with exploder, I told them yea almost every weekend. He said you have tow package but not a towing transmission. They rebuilt it again, and added HD gears, no charge under their 1 year warranty, and extended the warranty another year. I know there is more associated to it but for simplistic reasons, they made the tranny heavy duty.
