Default New Rattle & P0420 Code

Uh-oh! 206,000 miles and my 2007 F-150 finally has a problem.

Friday I heard a slight rattle. Today it's much worse. Did my cat converter disintegrate? Is there a cheap fix? I don't want to spend $600.00 for a new converter unless I am 100% certain that it is indeed the converter making all that noise.

Not bad, considering I have only had to change the oil and a couple of burned-out taillight bulbs, plus a couple of sets of Michelins, and front brakes, bearings, and rotors.

Don't tell me that! LOL

Going to remove it in a few minutes. Looking for a quick fix and a cheap fix.

Can I have an aftermarket converter welded into the pipe, or do I need to buy the whole pipe and converter?

Where can I get parts today? I was supposed to go on a long trip today. Had to postpone it until tomorrow, and don't want to rent a temporary ride.

First step, bang on your cats with a hammer to try to replicate the sound. It sound be the heatshield, as it was on mine. There are 4 tack welds and if two break, then it rattles big time.

Simple fix, 6" hose clamp. Loosen the hoseclamp all the way and wrap it around the cat. You'll need to shape the clamp into a nice oval shape. Tighten it down, problem solved. I had to do this on both of my cats. Since then, no rattle.

Crap. Forgot to mention: O'Reilly Auto Parts gave me a code P0420, so I'm pretty sure it's not the shield. Also, the engine light is on.

So far so good, until...

Got all the nuts off the clamps, and the sensor out of the converter. So how in heck do I remove the manifold to header flange nuts??? My long socket is too long. My short socket is too short. Dang it all!

No way would a box end fit up in that hole. Borrowed a ballnose socket extension from my brother. That worked.

Ford wants $1200.00 for a new cat. Dealer friend said that Ford has none in stock in the US. Wouldn't have paid that price anyway.

Another parts place had one in Ohio, and could have it to me tomorrow. $317.00. Not a bad price, but I have a 200 mile trip tomorrow, and didn't have time to wait.

Another parts place had the converter, but it had to be welded into my pipe, and would not accept the O2 sensor. Was only $250.00, but I don't do half-assed.

So after finally getting the pipe out, I used a tapered punch thru the O2 sensor hole to disintegrate the balance of the honeycomb, and shook it all out the end. No more rattle. (OK - so I do half-assed temporarily.)

Reassembly took an hour or so. Not bad.

Somewhere along the way I'll round up a new converter and install it.

Good news is the engine light is off, and no more rattle. Plus Ashley is going to give me a nice massage because I worked so hard.

Thanks for all the input.
