Default New member with cracked valve cover

Hello! I have an '06 Navigator (180k miles) with the 5.4L 3v engine.

I'm posting here because it's such an active forum and I have the same engine.

Anyway, I bought this truck and am fixing it up. The right (passenger) valve cover has a crack. It's toward the front of the car. It's on the side of the valve cover and you can see it when the tire and wheel well is removed.

The hole has allowed oil to seep everywhere and ruin the a/c compressor.

My question is what would cause the cracked valve cover? The engine sounds good.

I really appreciate any help or quidance.

Thanks!

It is plastic. Maybe bolts over tightened or road debris kicked up by tire hit it. you could remove it, clean it and repair with JB Weld, search bone yard's or last resort buy a new one. $$$

Thanks for the reply. Part of the crack looks like something internal broke it and pushed it outward.

This^^^. Check things out before you loose a timing chain.

X2. And buy a new/used valve cover. JB Weld/epoxy fixes are just going to make you have to do double work.

That's what I was thinking. I know the 2v 5.4 have plastic VC. Maybe Navigators do?

Sorry plastic valve cover was an assumption on my part, as for the problem probably chain guide or tension'r piece broke off and got sucked up in the timing chain.
For what its worth a properly cleaned and prepared composite engine part can be repaired and be stronger than new with JB Weld quick set.
