No, you're fine. You started exactly where you should've. It's just not an "introduction" thread anymore, so I moved it.

Might start with a TBody and MAF cleaning. Lots of threads on here to help you through it.

Also a can of Techron fuel system cleaner couldn't hurt.

I'd say MAF is dirty or there is a vaccum leak near the intake, I had a 96 mustang that had the same issue.

I have cleaned the MAF with the proper cleaner as well as the throttle body plate. I do have the typical cam phaser noise and have a pretty good idea that the guides, tensioners, chains are worn and loose. I had similar symptoms with a 4.6 in a mountaineer without cam phasers. Also, I will check really well for a leaking intake. I've heard that can be common to the 5.4. I will post an update when I figure it out. By the way for those of you looking into it. I found on Amazon and complete timing set with water pump, oil pump, and ALL parts including new phasers and updated tensioners. for $350. It's not OEM, but should serve as well. I will be attacking that soon. I plan on keeping the truck for a long time.

Congrats on your new truck. You may want to do a little research on the brand of components you buy. There are a ton of threads here on issues with Dorman components. Especially phasers. I like to save money as much as the next guy, but if you do all that work, you'd hate to not have it last for a long time. Just something to think about before you buy. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

$350 is way too cheap. I don't trust that one bit.

Do not buy anything other than Motorcraft for a timing system rebuild. Here is what I suggest:

Amazon.com: Ford 5.4L 3V Camshaft Drive Phaser Repair Kit - Phaser Sprockets, Tensioners, Guides, Chains Kit: Automotive Amazon.com: Ford 5.4L 3V Camshaft Drive Phaser Repair Kit - Phaser Sprockets, Tensioners, Guides, Chains Kit: Automotive

2 of these:

Amazon.com: 5.4L 3V VCT Control Solenoid 8L3Z-6M280-B - Genuine Ford OEM: Automotive Amazon.com: 5.4L 3V VCT Control Solenoid 8L3Z-6M280-B - Genuine Ford OEM: Automotive

Then upgrade your oil pump:

Amazon.com: Ford Racing (M-6600-F46) High Volume Oil Pump with Pick Up Tube: Automotive Amazon.com: Ford Racing (M-6600-F46) High Volume Oil Pump with Pick Up Tube: Automotive

Dorman is junk and will last you maybe 10-20K if you are lucky. Do it right the first time, if you only want to do it once.

Yea, not even all dorman parts would be that cheap, pass by and look for OEM Select, they have some decent prices on the kit.

^^^ agreed, I got my kit from OEM Select as well (that is an eBay store), and bought a power steering pump and water pump from Rock Auto

Okay. I'll research that. I don't want to do it again. Thank you for the advice. I will heed the warnings on the parts
