I have had Chevy's before, and the one thing I didnt have to worry about was the motors and transmissions. (everything else lol cant vouch for, lacking in a few areas)

The fords seem to not be as reliable as I thought.

Depends on the engine apparently

My mom had a 93 Aerostar 3.0 V6 with a manual and put over 500,000 miles on that, then got a 98 Ford ranger 3.0 V6 and put close to 400,000 miles on that, she drove over 400 miles a day working for the carrier Pony Express using her own vehicles. I put on over 215,000 miles on my 94 Ford ranger 2.3 I4 and being a Teenager with a new truck (I got this truck while still in highschool with only 17 miles on it) I beat the crap out of it. I gave it to my friend just last year after getting my 2005 2wd F150 STX 4.6 V8. I have 175,000 miles on it now.

These 4 vehicles I mention were bought brand new off the lot. the 2005 was another vehicle my mom bought after the 98 ranger but quit the Pony express thing shortly after getting the 05 STX, she sold it to me a few years ago with 114,000 miles on it.

If you take care of the truck and understand what needs to be done, you really shouldn't have issues.

I also have a 1997 ranger with 2.3. The 2.3 is an indestructible motor. Not a power house but it's dead reliable

I didn't want to give up my truck, but my fiancee and mom pressured me to get rid of it, my first car and I, it's first driver.

My friend needed a vehicle and I just gave him my truck, plus the fact I'm 6'4" and 300 pounds, means it was too small for me to keep using. I still get to see the truck every now and then, I was and still attached to that thing. I'll post some pictures from my phone in a bit

That was back in it's prime, over the years it was abused...

I've hit deer, ditches, mail boxes, Courtesy of a paper route. The transmission suffered as a result.

It sat for years (about 10 actually) and with patches of bondo and spray paint, my friend I gave it too ended up painting black primer on it. Honestly it looks better now than it did a few years ago.

Don't be afraid of the 5.4 its a good engine. Just do your research and look for maintenance records using Motorcraft parts. Listen for the cam phaser knock, ask about the phasers, ask about the plugs. Well maintained the truck will last as long as needed. As stated before getting into the 09's you could possibly get the 4.6 with the same timing issues. Again, don't be afraid just do your research. Low miles are good but proper maintenance is WAY more important. My 07 KR has 127k on her and has just developed a slight phaser knock. I will be doing the timing maintenance to her shortly. If you do buy one of these trucks I'll tell you what I've learned about Ford after about the 04 year models. Use Motorcraft parts!
