this is kind of off topic but i started the thread so i guess im allowed to ask hahaive read about what they do but why do they spin like this within themselves? that metal piece with the spring isn't there from the factory of course but why do they move like that?

they spin within themselves to be able to advance and retard timing... basically to maximize efficiency. VCT = Variable Cam Timing and the phasers are bolted to the end of the cam

This is a helpful video that Cutless009 showed me that explains the workings of the phasers. It's not on our engine but it's on a Ford so it's the same concept.

A lot of engines have variable valve timing now...its actually good as long as oil vct solenoids and filter are all correct and in working condition.

You're welcome. It really helped me visualize how that works with everything. I grew up working on an 01 expedition which is what my mom drives. It's in great condition with no major issues other than the windshield leaking a few times, and the roof in the back leaking requiring it to be rewelded. Other than that it's caused us no major issues. Paint is starting to oxidize on the hood though. It's a tough vehicle.
