Default Need help trans temp!

Here's my other dilemma, I had a jasper transmission installed at 95k when my old one blew the flywheel and took out 3rd and 4th gear with it. My mechanic put full synthetic fluid in the tranny because he said it lasted longer.

Ok update: i put a 10x11 heavy duty trans cooler on and that dropped number about 40* but would still get kinda hot idling so I put an electric fan that fit it perfectly on there wired to a switch and now I'm looking at awesome numbers. I'll get a pic when I can

It just shouldn't be getting hotter as you idle. Something isn't right. Have you checked your coolant? It just seems like you are putting a band aid on something more serious. Especially if your engine and trans are running hot, I would really consider taking a look at your thermostat and the condition of your coolant.

Mine gets hotter while idling in traffic but it doesn't go up quick either.

Also, are you sure that replacement fan clutch is good? Seems you started seeing this problem after you changed it because the fan was always spinning (seized clutch)?

Never heard of an electric fan clutch locking closed; the electric magnets usually will not engage, causing the fan to slip.

Maybe you could test for airflow by placing a fan in front of the radiator while it's idling. See if the temps lower and remain constant. This might tell you that you have an airflow issue still.

The replacement fan clutch is a ford one which replaced an auto zone brand one that someone else had installed. I do need to flush and change the coolant I know that. The engine runs pretty normal now 190- 200 range. When idling the motor does cool down but not the transmission so much so I put the bigger cooler and fan on it and now it doesn't see 180 on the highway which is great

Oh and another note my 2004 has the regular centrifugal fan clutch not the electric ones which I believe began in 2007

How do you check your tranny temp? Is there a gauge? My truck hasn't run since last Feb and I can't remember

Another benefit of owning a tuner. They provide this capability. The "lead" is obtained from the OBD-II port.

If you don't go the route of a tuner, you can still get a gauge type readout by purchasing a Scangauge-II or comperable.
