need help timing a 5.4 3v
broke a timing chain guide and had chain slap at startup, so did head gaskets while i was at it, new chains, tensioners, etc, and replacing a cam phaser... tried starting it but apparently a cam had turned. doh. so i put the motor at TDC, and set the chains on the dot with the colored link (i put some black paint on it just so i was 100% sure... ill wipe it clean with some acetone when i button it up) and then the drivers side cam is set to "L" with the colored links and passenger side is on the "R". i turn it over by hand and the links move over (i heard this is because its an odd link chain)
i just want to be sure before i put it all back together.
i appreciate any help you can provide...

Good luck with this brother, I am doing mine now. I set the timing mark on the harmonic balancer at 1:00 (actually I found out the mark was slightly off when I took the balancer off as the keyway was slightly before the 12:00 position), I checked the cam lobes to make sure that they were pointing in the right direction and marked the cam caps and the cam in between a couple lobes and started taking the cams off. Hopefully when I put the new phasers on, everything lines up. I am not sure if posting another sites web address is allowed on here but this link has the number 1 and 5 cam lobe positions to help you out. http://www.autorepairinstructions.com/?p=70

That's completely normal.. It takes a bunch of turns to get it back on the marks. If you turn it over enough it'll all line back up. As long as every timing mark is on to begin with you're completely fine.
