Need help

I was at Walmart and when I came outside it was snowing. On the way home I put the truck in 4H. I drove for about a 100 yards and it started sounding horrible. I pulled over and put it in 2H and it was fine. I then, while stopped, put it back in 4H and as I was pulling off it sounded horrible. As if a grinding or not going into gear. I immediately stopped and put it in 2H and it drove fine home.
I bought the truck from a 1 owner with 36K miles on it and it now has 39K.
Any ideas what this might be??

Sounds like an IWE, if you look in the sticky thread "Stop look here" or "5.4 problem Links" on the homepage of this year group, you will find a great 4wd troubleshooting thread. Good luck, let us know what you find.

I had this problem. Check the air pressure regulated for the 4wd under the hood on the passenger side firewall. Mine was leaking. Replaced and everything works perfect now.

I wanted to update everyone and thank everyone for their help.
The 4wd system checked out good however the issue discovered had to do with the drive shaft. It needed to be shimmed which corrected the issue. Since the truck was only driven for about 200 miles in 2 years (previous owner) I went ahead and had the Ford Dealership due a transmission service, transfer case service and change the front differential fluid just to be on the safe side.
Again, thank you for all of your help...
