Who cares if his parents are buying it or not? If they want to buy it for him it isn't any of y'all's place to say anything. He asked for lift advice, not life advice. If you can't offer assistance relating to the thread then move on. My parents paid for the majority of my truck. Did I deserve it? Not even close. So get off your high horse of "back in my day" useless garbage and offer assistance.
Now to OP's question. I've heard Rough Country isn't great just like you've heard. I'd run it though. If it rides a little rough who cares? It's a truck. Lol. You can stuff 35's under a 2.5" level though. I've got some on mine running 1.5" wheel spacers to get clearance from the LCA and frame. No problems directly related to the spacers and I've had them around 15K miles. Zone and BDS seem to be the front runner of lifts but they're more expensive. Rancho makes a good quality 4" lift for our year of trucks that's pretty cheap.

I got lucky and just had to trim plastic and buy wheel spacers. NTB flat out refused to put 35's on my truck and the manager argued with me about it on the showroom floor. It was ridiculous.
