could be but it sounds like its in the rear end pretty clearly. Thisis driving me nuts....Does anybody have any opinions on how the pinion is meshing up to he ring gear? you can see the contact marks in the picture and its looks like there may be a pretty good gap.

im thinking its the pinion bearing. does anybody know where I can get the clearances and torque specs for the rear end? Im going to try to pull this apart with my dad and do the bearings and i want to make sure everything is shimmed and tightened to spec.

im wondering if since there doesnt seem to be any damage to the pinion and ring if I could just take it to a shop and have them reset the whole rear end and try to adjust it so that the noise goes away? cant they just play with the preload and shims until its good and quiet?

Personally i'd just drive it intill it got worse. If there is slop its going to need to all be replaced. I would wait till it got worse. And have a shop do it. Not a little mom and pop shop, unless there known to rebuild axles. Or something with some kind of warrenty. There isn't much lee-way. A differential that is a daily driver needs to be precise.

I just want somebody to look at those pictures and confirm the gears look undamaged lol. To me it seems like I should be able to adjust the pinion and get rid of the noise. Is that not how it works?

My 2005 FX4 SCrew has slowly developed this similar rear end noise as well. I'm now at 91k miles, and it seems to be getting louder. Only thing is, it's more of a higher pitched "AHHHHHH' sort of sound. You begin to hear it at around 25 mph, and it gets increasing louder as speeds build. At highway speeds, it has now made what used to be a pleasantly quiet truck to now a rather annoyingly loud truck. (Have had the truck since new) You only hear the noise upon acceleration. Letting off the accelerator, or shifting into neutral, results in the sound ceasing until you get back on the gas. Other than this issue, this has been a remarkably great truck.
