Default Napa Autocare Center - Says I need Valve cover gasket replaced $600-$850?

I got my oil changed at a local center. I asked to get my injectors cleaned...They did not have the parts to put the cleaner in my fuel rail and offered to put it in my tank. I declined.

They pointed out I need some gaskets replaced. Sure enough with 100,000Mi I do have some oil leaks. Its probably time to do something maybe tighten the screws.

Here is the estimate:
$378 Valve Cover Gasket
$75 Valve Cover Gasket Set
$157 Manifold Gasket Set (Intake)
$141 Engine Oil Filler Adapter Gasket $141

$520 Labor
$233 Parks (Yeah it doesn't add up to the parts)
$39 Misc Parts
$22 Tax
---------------
$814

They mentioned its high estimate and it could be $600

Its obvious I have oil leaks. They said it could damage the engine mount (yes its leaking on that). They said I used a 1.5 Quarts in 3500 Miles. I didn't check but I will be monitoring the levels.

I am not mechanically inclined. I called the dealership to get their estimate on the same job....waiting

I am not sure about this local shop when they were trying to sell me a NAPa Battery 8465 for $165 + $20 installation when 3 other stores will sell me the same battery for $144 (some offered free installation)

I can get a motor-craft battery at the dealership for $120 + $10 Installation.... I do need a battery.

Yours thoughts...

I'm confused... everything you listed would run you $1565...

It is the new common core math.

I would also run from that place, a valve cover gasket for your 4.2l is only
40-50 bucks, not 378.

I think they may be including the labor with the gasket estimate? I've gotten estimates from shops that didn't really break things out in the way that it would seem - the parts column would be right, but the labor column would be the total for that job, including parts + labor + tax.

$800 is really high though, I just had the same job done for about half that...

For that price you could run out and by every tool necessary, a manual, the repair parts, and do it yourself.. All while still saving about $500 dollars while simaltaniously making yourself at least slightly mechanically inclined....

It's very easy stuff.. Loosen bolts, remove bolts, swap valve cover, put bolts back, and tighten.. If I told this secret to everybody, there may be a lot of mech shops going out of business.... So Shhhh!

I was thinking the same thing.

That is why I learned to work on my own vehicles. I am by no means a master mechanic but I take care of, with the help of the internet and this site for my F150, about 90% of any problems that arise.

The top numbers on your invoice add up to the bottom numbers. The top one is broken down by jobs, the bottom one is broken down into parts and labor. Apparently not only are you not mechanically inclined, math isn't your thing either. Hopefully you are nice to look at. And yes, run away.

Really helpful information there, I hope you never need help on a forum and receive this type of answer. We try to help each other here, that is the purpose of this forum. Help like this is not help, I would rather read another "what kind of oil are you guys using" thread than read posts like yours. And yes, with answers like yours, I hope that you are nice to look at as well.

OP, stay away from that shop, you can do the work yourself, study up, look at the job a couple of times and then do it. Most of us are here to lend a hand. Good luck
Tom
