Thanks for the input. Just poured over the vct solenoid thread for the past hour....interesting stuff.
I am getting a quote for new vct solenoids tomorrow

Fink...changing the oil this weekend to 5w-30 and the noises have decreased to almost nothing. Since the truck is an 07 replacing the vct solenoids require the removal of the valve covers.

Going to see how the truck holds up and will make the vct change if the heavier oil didn't fix the issue.

No it doesn't sound like a diesel, just chugs and seems to miss and run rough.

hld247, thanks for that. I wasn't aware that the 07+ had to have the valve covers removed to access the VCT solenoid? The writeups in the massive VCT thread state that it can be done without removing them.

^^^^ yes the valve covers have to come off in order to get the vct out on our 07's. I have changed mine and there is no other way but to take off the valve covers. You necessarily dont have to completely take them off but all the bolts must be loose and you can lift the front up and get to them. Thats how I did it the second time around.

Ahh gotcha. Shoot, I thought the process looked pretty simple in the how-to writeup...maybe it's a different ballgame when you have to remove the valve covers.

So my truck hasn't been making "the noise" lately but what, realistically, are the harms of this solenoid failing?

In a nut shell you'll ruin the top end of your motor. They control the oil pressure up top, to your phasers and your timing components. My advice would be to change them asap if they have never been done. They have updated them a few times since 07

So my truck is goin in on thursday...So far my gryphon isn't showing the P0345 and I doubt that Ford is going to be able to duplicate it...Is it worthwhile for me to tell them just to replace the VCT solenoids and inspect the phasers, etc?
I have heard the horror stories with ford trying to "diagnose" issues like mine...
