I just had the same problem this week.. I took my truck (2007 F150 4x4, 43k miles) hunting which there was mudd involved.. anyways.. all I did was disconnect the power to the 4wd solenoid and removed both fuses. (on my truck it was fuse 29 & 30 for 4wd)

took it for a test drive to see if it would try to engage the 4wd while driving in 2wd and around the 40-43 mph is when I noticed it the most when fuses and solenoid were connected, being that the fuses were pulled it would not engage but 4HI and 4LOW lights would come on like it was the computer telling it to engage..

All I did was disconnect the battery for 5-10 min to reset and reconnected fuses and 4wd solenoid PROBLEM WAS FIXED AND GONE!!!.. It was the memory trying to tell the truck to engage the 4wd while in 2wd..

STRANGE but it worked for me FOR NOW.. cost me $0... knocking on wood though, hopefully it doesnt come back but if it does just pull your fuses and it will eliminate the problem for the meantime..

Will that same problem with the solenoid cause the 4wd, hi or lo, to not engage? On our '07 F150 the lights to indicate it is in 4wd illuminate, but the front wheels do not engage. The truck is subjected to dirt & moisture contantly.

Yes, it will cause 4wd not to engage. Mine had that issue before replacement. Sometimes if I could get it to engage, it did not want to disengage.

Here is a popular link for trouble-shooting our 4x4 systems. I have an edited/augmented version on Word, but it's too big to paste here.

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/836438-everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-the-iwe-system-and-then-some.html

Our 4x4 systems are pretty clever actually (designed by WARN) and fairly easy to repair.

I got mine at tasca parts for $16. You have to order by the part# otherwise they will send you the old style.
