Default My rear end clunk is gone

I started to get the dreaded clunk, but decided to take the advice of many here and remove the drive shaft and lube the spline coupling. Needless to say it totally worked. Very simple job. I could do it in 15 minutes now. So, Thanks guys. Here's a few pics of what it looks like for you guys who haven't done it and are contemplating doing it. Basically remove the 4 bolts that hold the drive shaft to your differential. Disconnect the bellows seal at the spine end, push the shaft toward the front of the truck and it will come right off the diff. Then just slide it rearward to remove. Don't forget to make some marks on both ends so you put it back in the same position it was originally.

Here's a close up of the spline on the shaft. Had some grease on it but apparently not enough to eliminate the clunk.

Glad it worked out for u. Most people don't believe that it will fix it but it does. Mine has been clunk free for over a month now. Enjoy it

I ran out of my moly paste, so I just used general purpose grease. If the clunk comes back soon, I'll have to do it again with better grease.

Any idea what causes the clunk?

I had a 2002 Toyota Tacoma and when stopping at a red light/stop sign, etc. sometimes, the rear end would sit and then I'd get a "clunk" sound. The Toyota tech said that if an oil change place uses too much grease in the drive shaft zerk it gets packed in the end of the shaft. So, the tech then has to disassemble the drive shaft like Rick did in this thread and remove the excess grease.

I wonder if this same thing is happening here?
