Default MPG ? Topper ? or not

Hello, 1st post here. I have read conflicting info on mpg's and toppers. My wife drives the 2006 F-150 4X4 w/5.4. We live in the middle of nowhere and trips to town are a major effort.
Have any of you with toppers such as a SnugTop checked your milage with and without the topper?
Any mods for this particular truck worth doing? I did real good with the mods on my Powerstroke, got me about 4 mpg with intake, exhaust and TSperformance chip.
We have considered a cover for the F-150, but with the cost of fuel I don't want to do that if it will hurt my milage. I would buy one that fits the cab the best to help areo. Any suggestions ? Thanks for all replies.

You typically gain 1-2 mpg with a topper.

I thought mythbusters proved that there is not much wind drag associated with the bed area. tailgate up or down myth. Now something else to consider, weight the topper adds vs. mpg gained. Not much weigh then again I also find it hard to believe that you can gain 1-2 mpg. I say your gonna get what you get. Keep it tuned up and check your tires. Just my 2 cents.

then again I want a soft cover, more for looks than worried about mpg.. LOL

I need one that is soft so it is out of the way to load my quad.
I have the 5.4L and get around 15.7 to 17.2.

Thanks for the replies. I would love to put a Tonneau cover on but we have to many dogs that like to go! I will probaly get a topper, just did not want to spend that kind of money if it was going to hurt my milage. Thanks
