Default movement in rear axle

I have a 04 f-150 9.75 rearend 4wd i was hearing a knocking in the rear when i drive in a pot hole or uneven pavement. Last week i jack the rear end off the ground and i could move the wheel up and down and i dont mean in and out so i said the wheel bearing must be gone. So i went to ford and brought one bearing when i sled the bearing down over the axle while off i got the same play as the old bearing. The axle dont look like its worn is that little movement normal. i check the two axle with a digital calapers and i am geting the same reading. do anyone know the specs on the axle. If not normal what could the trouble be. I hope you guy can help me out.
