People who scoff at the idea of changing a synthetic oil "early" obviously dont know these 3V engines well. Redfish nailed it. Ford asked a heck of a lot of the oil in these motors and then gave it a barely adequate oil pump to do it with.

5000 (8000km) I just use reg 5w20 name brand oil (Petro Canada, Pennsoil, Castrol even motorcraft) My oil never seems to look real dirty....... My 2010 4.6 turned 500,000km last summer....now I don't drive it but it runs like a champ!!

3000 on the recommendations of those here (and Ford if you are a FlexFuel vehicle and use E-85)...I use full synthetic and the Motorcraft FL820S filter...I've only owned mine for two oil changes (3rd coming up in a few days) and the change from 5W20 to 5W30 was noticeable and is preferred (for me)...124K miles and original oil pump and timing stuff...

Original Owner changed oil at 9K and had it changed at Firestone or Ford dealership using the synthetic blend 5W20 and was told the truck needed a new engine or at the least a full rebuild...I took it over a year ago now and it has run fine but for the diesel clatter that I know needs attention but several symptoms it experienced under it's previous owner have not returned since my earlier oil change schedule and the change to 5W30 full synthetic...YMMV

Bill

Hmmm I changed at ~7,000 and had oil tested. Results showed it could go longer. I'll go ~8,000 now. I have about 70,000 on truck and engine runs great like it always has. Lots of highway miles.

3000 with motorcraft synthetic blend. Only because that equals out to once a year. If I drove more miles in a year I’d definitely go to 5000.

At 3000 mile intervals, I'd be changing my oil every two monts. I put 1000 miles a month on mine just to & from work.

Was running 5w-20 w/motorcraft filter all of its life up until the cam phaser and timing chain job at around 145K miles. I ran Pennzoil full synthetic and platinum at around 110K miles. Well after the timing job it started to consume about a quart every 1K miles so I switched to Rotella gas truck 5w-30. No luck on consuming oil so I've switched to supertech 5w-30 high mileage full syn with the same results. I'm just going to stick with that as it is cheaper and plentiful at walmart. I'm at 180K now and still change it no latter than 5K miles but sometimes sooner depending on available time, usage of the truck, upcoming trip, or how board I am.
I've seen no difference between Pennzoil and Supertech but I have lost MPGs due to 5w-20 vs 5w30. I may switch back to the 20 and see if it'll bring the mpg back up....

The recommendation to use 5W30 after doing the timing job is to better protect the timing components. I should mention the fact that when I switched to synthetic oil (Originally Castrol GTX High Mileage Synthetic blend, and currently Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage Full Synthetic (the stuff made from natural gas), my truck started using oil at the rate of 1 quart every 1000 miles. This was before doing the timing job when I started using 5W30 synthetic/synthetic blend. When I was using the cheap Quaker State 5W20, it was using about a quart every 2500-3000 miles.
