Changing your oil cannot hurt your engine, maybe every one hundred miles since it runs before the oil pump kicks some oil in, but that's also why the motorcraft filter is superior for the anti drain back valve. I see 3vs 250k plus and I see 3v's barely make 100k and I bet ya can't guess which ones were done at 3k and which were 5-6k.
Saying changing oil is bad is like saying the spark plugs are hard to do...
That's was my concept I have changed 5.4 engines with 15k on oils! Bet you know what his next problems were! End end up being cam phasers and a ton of sludge and carbon build up! It actually had burned about 2-3 quarts of the 7 in the engine! We ended up replacing the motor at 76k miles on the truck! Ill stick to my 3000-3500 oil changes

Using a quality oil at even at 7500 will not cause sludge. Using inferior oils and trying to extend them will. We tested the 3V at the facility I worked at and have opened up both. Oil choice is critical to determining the OCI and analysis will help in that. The blanket statement that 3k is a necessity is not always true. I'll agree that Ford's ADBV is well made. If you like changing your oil and wasting what is left in it that's your prerogative. Two thousand miles between 3k and 5k even on most conventionals is not life or death for most motors.

Im really wasteig money doing the change every 3k because its only $16 for me to change my oil at work aka the Ford Dealer all I have to do is bring my own filter or buy a motocraft from them! I got a bulk motocraft pack of 24 FL-820S filters for $37 really cheap and my mustang takes same one! I change my mustangs oil about every 1500-2500 miles or so! All I drive it a year! So 1-2 per year!

Changing oil is the single most important thing you can do to prolong the engine. For $18 ill change it every 3. For $33 if I didn't work on the trucks and do it myself id still do it at 3. It's not like its expensive, or hard to do.. I've owned my truck for the last 30k on it and I don't have a hint of phaser noise. Now as for the rear end clutch packs I've put two sets in but that's another story :p. the point I'm getting at is this motor was designed to run 5w20 and a motorcraft 820. And be changed 3-5k. Why run anything else when it's priced mid range.

I never said anything about wasting money. I said wasting what life is left in the oil. The point of this whole thread was about how long of OCI a person can run. According to science and analysis we've proven it can go much longer than the old standards and time is not nearly as much of a factor in the OCI as it use to be. A UOA is a valuable tool for the average guy to determine how long the oil can go. For us who worked in the industry, we had the luxury of tearing down motors along with UOA and particle counts to see how oils and engines performed. Emotions and feel good always will trump science though.

Back when I first started driving and buying cars over 40 years ago, I would change my oil every 2,000 miles and the manuals said do it 4,000 miles. A lot of people who followed the owners manual would often go beyond 4,000 and engines would go south at less than 100,000 so people who kept their cars for over 100,000 miles ALWAYS exceeded the recommended OCI. I have read that oils, filters, engines are a lot better than they used to be and you dont need to change oil as often. Oil has also gotten a lot more expensive where I used to spend about $5.00 for an oil change now spend over $25.00. I now do what the owners manual recommends or perhaps change 1,000 miles sooner than recommended and everything seems just fine. My truck has 159,000 miles on it, my car has 131,000 miles on it and my other car has 40,000 on it and the engines seem just fine. I have been using the better synthetic oil in all vehicles for the past several years and the premium oil filters.

I'm with Otto on this one. I used to be stuck on the 3k intervals until I sent my oil in for a UOA and found out how much I was wasting, I was shocked. I stick to a 5k interval now only because its easy to remember but I could easily run up to 8k plus on the oil I run judging by the UOA I had done.

I'm waiting on a oil sample kit right now... To see what it looks like after 25k miles..Lots of towing in 100+ degree days. Royal purple 5w20 ...about 6k miles ago i swapped filter and added a fresh quart of 5w30

I'm willing to bed the oil is shot

I think OCI should be personally determined by the end user. If I only put 2500 miles on a 7500 mile oil, I would still change it at 2500 depending on a few conditions. Conditions ranging from short trips, weeks of being parked, time of the year, an overheat from a bad water pump, or even before or a after a very long 500+ mile trip... I only use the manufacturers OCI recommendations as an insurance policy not as gospel. Like Otto said, it is an emotional, gut, or personal decision..

Not to hijack, but what if I hardly put miles on my truck?? I only put about 30 miles or less a week on my truck. So about how often should I change it. I've had my truck about 1.5yrs and have only changed the oil once, but I did use moblie 1 5w20 with a k&n oil filter. If I wait for the 5k-7k mark, it can be over a year. Any suggestions??
