Default mileage: how high is too high

Hello all, I am new here and had a question. I am looking to buy an 04 or 05 Supercrew. After looking for a little bit, I figure I can get one with 100,000-120,000 miles for $12.5K-$14K, which is what my budget is. My question is how high is too high? For example, I would never buy a Camaro or Mustang with 120,000 miles....is it really that different for a truck? Right now, I am looking at an 04 FX4 Supercrew with 121,000 miles for $13.5. The body is in good shape (I have yet to see the inside or test drive it). Assuming that everything checks out, would the mileage scare anyone with more knowledge than myself? Thanks for your advice.

if you can spin a wrench, high mileage trucks can save you alot of cash, if you take everything in, might end up costing more in the end. only time will tell.

Like I always tell my wife: "not even broke in yet". I haven't bought a new vehicle in years. The 2005 F150 I currently owned had 83K when I bought it. Still have it, and won't plan to replace it until it can no longer start, or legally run on a public street. I don't expect that to happen until it reaches the 200K plus point.

If you can obtain the service records from the previous owner(s), that's a plus. Frequent oil changes and required maintenance can provide you with a good feeling of knowing the truck was well maintained.

If you search here, you will find the trouble points that the 2004 to 2008 trucks can experience: power window failure, the dreaded spark plug issue on some models, and ticking noise from the engine. All these and more are discussed. Before you buy, I'd recommend you use this information AND HAVE THE TRUCK examined by a private mechanic before you make the purchase.

Bought my 06 in January with 124K miles on it... Looked around, at the time, ones with 20-60k miles were still about 22k. Bought mine for 12k. Best car I have ever drove, love the power and torque it puts out at stock

You might be able to negotiate down to about 10k

Just as a reference I just purchased a 2005 F150 XLT Supercab for $8700. Private party good book value was about $12.6k. It had 106k miles on it and was very clean. It runs very good, so I am feel it should be pretty trouble free. It had a few minor electrical issues, which helped in the negotiations. Even though these minor issues, one being the power window switches were questionable, will only cost about $200 to fix once I get around to them.

That price seems pretty high, but trucks may go for more in your area. I say look at Craig's list, Autotrader, and other local sales magazines. I found prices that would be $5k in difference for basicly the same vehicle. Well worth looking around to save that much. Good luck in your search.

When I turned 16 I bought a 91 Camaro Z28 with 190,000+ miles on it. I'm 23 now and it has 236,000+ on it. Keep the fluids changed and use full synthetic.

I purchased a 1985 Volvo 760 Turbo sedan with 337k on it. All I had to do to it was replace the fuel computer and replace the front struts and I turned around and sold it at 389k for $1500.

Just bought a 04 FX4 Crew cab with 179000 miles. One owner and its cleaner than the 96000 mile 2wd lariat I had last. Only problem with the FX4 is it shudders when downshifting from overdrive back to 4th. Motor has the usual diesel sound but I put a magnaflow exhaust and SCT x3 and now its damn powerful. Only on the 87/89 tune and its much faster than before the programmer.

My 04 has 219k and it still runs like it has 50k. Ford made a good engine, I wouldn't be afraid at all if it only had 120k on it. Go for it and enjoy the savings
