Default Metal grinding noise. HELP

I have a 2005 F150 4x4, 4.6 ltr, auto, SuperCrew. I just started getting this noise that would be similar to grinding brakes. The strange thing is, when I switch to 4 wheel drive. The sound goes away. Back to 2 wheel drive, and It re-appears. It is a faint noise, but noticable. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance!

I had a metal sound, almost like marbles in a can when I was going up a hill or had some weight in the back. First thing I did was check for a van leak and replaced my IWE solenoid which did not the problem. My two actuators were bad and that fixed the problem. Not sure if this is what you are experiencing but when I put my truck in 4x4 HI it stopped.

Yupp...definately sounds like the 4wd guts down there. Have em checked out before you really need it and it's not there.

Bones .. Thanks for the reply.. I am not familiar with actuators. Where are they? Did you do the work yourself? Thanks for your help!

I did not do the work myself. The actuators I believe were $109.00 each. It cost me $375 to get done at the dealer but I am sure you can get it done cheaper.
