Manual for an '04??
So here's my question to those who are more savvy than I in the electrical/cpu department...
I'm wanting to install a manual tranny in my '04 (non-heritage) F150. I know it wasn't an option on these trucks. I'm also aware of the mounting and driveline issues that will need to be addressed. So here's what I don't know... Will my computer go nuts when it's no longer controlling the shifts?? I've thought worst case scenario I'll need a brain for an '03 that came with a manual, but I'd hate to think the kind of wiring nightmare that would be if the harness configuration changed at all between the heritage era bodies and my truck.
My truck has the 281ci, 4x4, reg cab, long bed.
Any thoughts from an informed source would be awesome!
-To answer the "why's".... I love being able to control the motor by shifting. Plain and simple. This truck has been parked as my daily driver and is now "The Truck" So, now I'm looking to tinker with it a little more...

This has been talked about in the past. The manual transmission was available in the late 2004 to 2008 4.2 V6 trucks only. I could not tell you how robust this transmission would be in the 4.6 or 5.4's, so as long as you are putting it into the V6, you'd be alright. As to the PCM controlling the shift points of the automatic, I'd not worry about that, as you'd have a manual, and therefore the PCM would not be controlling the manual. It may however be confused as to other functions; engine timing and fuel pressure to the fuel rail delivery based on the shift points may be an issue, to name a few. Since I don't have code printouts of the PCM flashed memory, I could only suggest you get the PCM along with all the other parts one would need to do the swap from the donor.
It was strongly suggested that a manual transmission "donor" truck be readily available (in other words, parked at the location of this swap) in order to do this conversion, as you would no doubt be running back and forth to this donor truck for brackets, pedal assemblies, bellhousing, clutch assembly, flywheel, and all the other various pieces needed to do the swap.
Those that where serious in wanting a manual decided it would be better to just sell their automatic transmission truck and buy one with a manual.
Not saying it can't be done; just quite a bit of work and cost. IMO, sell the automatic and buy one with a manual transmission.

And what truck would you be able to find with a manual that has a v8 and 4wd?
I dont think its an option in any half ton trucks anymore and hard to find in heavy duty trucks.
Ive asked about this before too and was basically told it wont work. Sucks because theres times when I really wish my truck had a 5 speed.

Its gona be hard because of the 4x4, any stick out a 2 vavle mustang will work.
Tremec t-45, tremec 3650, even a t-56 will bolt up to any 4.6 2v and 5.4 2v.
Ull need a custom driveshaft made, clutch assembley, flywheel and clutch. I hope I helped ya out. Chad

Then again, maybe if there's enough demand, someone will put together a kit type deal.
