Last night coming home from work it was about -5 degrees outside. Truck made that horrible whistling noise. I don't know what it is but it only made it when i was going around 45mph. If anyone has found the fix for this please let us all know.

So I got my truck back today... Idler pulley was bad which was changed 8 months ago, so it was replaced for free. My power steering pump was making a lot of noise and causing the whistle sound ($340 OUCH!!!!!) My alternator was tested because I told them this was the problem but they told me it was working fine.My truck is quiet now..... well not quite, we are in a deep freeze here in ottawa. Trucks done like -45 in the morning!!

The dealer I went to are complete idiots... Still have the whistle sound with cold weather. The moan sound that lasts 15sec from my PS Pump is normal in cold weather. I even talked to 3 different dealers. So they are putting in a UPDATED alternator in my truck and giving me $100 back and I keep the new pump. I don't know what to believe now but I sure hope this fixes the loud whistle sound. We are getting into the -30 this weekend. I will keep you posted on what happens.

Default Whistle

My 04 fx4 does the same in cold weather. It is the alternator. Had it load tested and everything is good. will put up with the whistle until spring and warm weather again.

Now if they can just find the cause for the cracking noise around the passenger side windshield. It only does it when I go over 50 mph.

Did you ever find out what that cracking sound was at your passenger side?? Mine just started doing this. Sound is pronounced and intense.

i have a 05 f150 with the 3v 5.4 makes the same whistle noise as in the video above. my 05 stx f150 with the 4.6 2v made the same noise. i live in central ny and they both do it in only cold conditions, its just the density of the winter air moving through the plastic intake tube making the noise. if you blip the throttle it goes away momentarily. seen in it another forum. there solution was an intake tube mod, or buy an aftermarket kit.

It was the idler pulley on mine too. Have someone check that, it seems to be a semi common problem.

There are several issues with this ranging from the idler pulley to alternator bearings. I am working on a sticky to help clarify it all.

Default Loud Noise

Thank you for the reply, had one in the shop last week doing the same. the one I had was the idler pulley for the drive belt, disconnect the serpentine belt from the engine and start the truck to see if the noise goes away,if it does, the idler on your engine is a metal pulley, the idler pulley you need to install is a revised part and made of plastic, here is the part number, pulley #9 in the diagram. hope this helps.
