Default Performance Upgrades

I've got a 2004 4.6 4x4 what are some good upgrades as far as exaust and air filter. Not looking to alter internals of the engine. Will Headers and a performance muffler allow more breathing or do I need different cats as well? Thinking k& n Cai as well.

Hi and welcome!

Sadly - unless you are fixin' to just add some preferential 'noise', an exhaust upgrade nets you no gains.

As fer air filters - stick to stock Motorcraft paper. Change it regularly.

CAI's? Total waste of money on ye truck - the stocker already outflows the engine's requirements.

If you want to buy something worthwhile, with safe tangible gains, invest in a custom-tuned SCT flash programmer. Best bang fer buck at that price-point. After that, regearing makes the largest impact other than a blower.

Ask fer ye Forum discount. These be good fellers. Fantastic tunin'.

Good luck

Ok been looking and found an sct tuner and 3 mpt tunes for 399. My concern is that they would be hard on the transmission. Guess with three one would want a performance towing and economy. Looked like street was good for towing and economy but the more aggressive would be better for the performance tune. What kind do u run? Does it help fuel economy performance and torque like they say? How long does it take to reprogram?

Look around for a used Edge that has been unmarried. I bought one on Craigslist for my 4.6 and it made a big difference. You can convert it over to a Gryphon also and those tunes seemed to help a bit more.

This is also my recommendation. Plus after you convert it to a Gryphon (via Pegasus software) from the website http://store.gopowerhungry.com/ then you can order custom tunes for $40 each.

OP - be advised - I've been informed that PHP may actually be phasing out custom tuning on the Edge platform for Ford gas engines in the near future - so I'd be concerned aboot ongoing support. The canned tuning is just not that remarkable - you want custom.

Additionally used devices have no warranty. And beware of shady operators selling VIN-locked devices - it will cost you extra to get it unlocked.

SCT has a vast custom tuning dealer network and the X4 is miles ahead of the aging Edge device. If you decide to upgrade yer truck the device (and yer investment) cannot follow you - the X4 can ( e.g: it'll work on a 2015 as of this writing).

MPT offers a discount for forum members as I already stated - it will be less than $399. Three custom calibrations are included in that price. Yer tranny is actually safer - less heat due to less slip.

Invest wisely. Call /email / PM MPT.

MGD do you know why the 4wd 4.6 long tube headers won't fit the 2wd? I found a review on amazon that said he bought the pacesetter LTs and they fit without modification even tho they were made for a 4wd any thoughts?

Yea, they will fit.

Some history, - Pacesetters and the 2v Modular's: In the past, all that was available from Pacesetter in LT's were 4x4 5.4L headers (2V engines). These were also compatible with the 4.6L 2wd, 5.4L 2wd, but not the 4.6L 4x4's. 4.6L heads sit lower in the engine bay vs the 5.4L which caused an issue with drive-shaft contact. 4wd 4.6L headers were designed then manufactured to clear the drive-shaft.

If you have the 4.6L 4wd, you have to be specific when ordering. Aside from that and for your 2wd 4.6L, ANY of the above will fit your truck.
