Default Looking at a truck, but 4x4 is not working

Hey, I sold my 04 and I'm looking at buying a another truck. I'll found a truck going for a good price because the 4x4 is not working. Should I be worried? Is the 4x4 expensive to fix and would it be bad to drive without getting the 4x4 fixed because I don't really need it. I am kinda iffy about buying another 04-08 truck. I'm thinking about just going back to the 10 gen. trucks until I can afford an 09+.

Thanks

4WD system is easy to trouble shoot and most common parts are not that expensive... could be just a IWE solenoid .. very common failed item .. $60

I'd try to diagnose the issue. If you flip the switch to 4HI and hear a clunk, there's a good chance everything is okay with the transfer case. At that point, it's either the IWEs, or the solenoid. I replaced both on my truck when I got it.. cheap and relatively easy.

Thanks for your info as well. I'm glad it's not that difficult and expensive to repair. I am going to look at the truck Friday(If he hasn't sold it yet!) it has 220k miles on it. As long as the motor and transmission don't show any signs of death I will bring it home. It has the 4.6 engine which actually a plus for me. I made up my mind to stay away from the 5.4 in this gen unless the milage is low. I'll keep you guys posted

Just bring a compression tester with you and test the cylinders; if those pass and you hear the transfer case clunk like dyeguy1212 mentioned I'll bet you're looking at a pretty good truck

Get a rubber mallet and give the actuator motor a few taps. Worked for me. Then I took the motor off, dissembled it, cleaned it up, lubed it and it's been working great ever since

The technician read the maintenance request from the pilot: Sounds like a midget with a hammer underneath the cockpit.

Resolution:
Took hammer from midget.
