Default Looking to purchase '06 F150

OK, I've been in the market for a larger truck for a little while now. I found an '06 F150 with 5.4 Triton at a dealer with just over 90k on it. The issue I have with it is that it is tapping. I heard it as soon as they started it up for the test drive and it didn't change after it warmed up. The sound is definitely coming from the passenger side of the truck and I can't hear it from inside of the vehicle. The truck ran fine without any issues, but the tapping is just not right. It sounds like it could be an exhaust leak or it could be something else. I started reading about cam phasers, etc. I don't know that sound so I can't say for sure. They said the truck was already through the shop and nothing was said about the sound. I told them to send it back through the shop tomorrow for the specific sound and get back to me.

Anything specific I should look for or make them check?

Thanks

- Jason

It could be an exhaust leak from all I've read on this forum but be careful about that tick because it could def be the phaser(s)

What I would personally do is see about taking the truck to another ford dealer. That way a non biased dealership could look at it. That would make me more comfortable personally since they aren't trying to get your money from the truck, just the problem lol. As the other guy said, it could be an exhaust manifold leak based off what I've read on here, but you never know.

Personally, I'd stay away from 04 to 07 trucks. I think 08 has several improvements to the engine - phasers, spark plugs, etc.

Find an 08 private sale, and it will probably be the same price as an 06 from the dealer.

Thanks guys. I haven't heard from the dealer yet so I don't know if they had time to look at it yet or not. If they don't fix the sound, I won't be buying it. I'm really hoping it's just an exhaust leak or simple fix. I've been looking at a bunch of these trucks and this one is in the nicest condition.

I would consider walking away. If it was an exhaust leak, I would take it (like I did), but not with phaser issues. Also, and I don't know if you'll care or what your plans are for the truck, but the AUX input wasn't put in the truck until '07, which is the single thing that annoys me about my truck. I know it's a small detail, but unless you like CDs that will be extra money as well if you want one. I would do what Stan said and try looking for an '08.
