Just to add my 2 cents worth, I'd avoid the 5.4 completely. Maybe, just maybe I'd consider a very low mileage one of 08 vintage but other than that, nope, don't wanna see it in my driveway. Lots of good ones out there and true, you only really hear about the bad, but they still have a poor reputation, at least in my neck of the woods. Sort of like the 6.0 Ford diesel, friends don't let friends buy those either. The newer 5.0 on the other hand seems to be a good motor. I think I'd stay clear of the Ecoboost engines too. Seems like they have been less than stellar as well.

My 06 didn't develop the exhaust manifold leak until around 195k, been driving it like this for over a year (might fix it eventually lol) other than that no problems, timing components are quiet. Couldn't ask for a more reliable engine IMO.

I agree, 200K, if it needs a rebuild, so what. As far as the new 5.0 goes, there are many issues with those as well, oil leaks, short block replacements, etc. That is no cherry either.

You left out oil consumption, out of round cylinders, knocking, etc. When my 5.4 craps out it will be replaced with a crate 5.4, I do however believe, the newer these engines get the less reliable they are. Not good for people who plan on keeping their truck for many years, and how will these issues effect resale value in years to come? I believe vehicles are following the path of the desktop pc, after a few years it's going to be useless and not financially wise to keep it operational.

You can do a search for threads started by me. To see what I worked out for my deal. Basically I am beat them down on price until I got the price I wanted and then to close the deal I made them replace spark plugs all the fluids and give me another $600 for tires.

I agree with summers and Doug. There are several fords out there running just fine. My 05 has 101k with no issues. But be aware that the injectors on these engines are loud. You will hear those with the hood open. Also the cam phaser is a nuisance, but isn't going to kill the engine. Lots of people choose to ignore it and run them with no issues. I'd buy another of these trucks in a heartbeat. Bought mine with 20k on it and now with 101k only problem I've had is a vac. leak that I had to have the shop find because I don't have a smoke machine. Love my truck man. Wheel and deal and you'll enjoy the truck.

Yep, I will replace my engine with another 5.4 if need be. The new Ford engines seen terrible whether its a 5.0 or eco, they are not getting much love.
