Default looking to buy my first f150..

hi, new to this site and am excited to join the f150 community! Right now in the process of buying my first truck.. looking at a 2004 f150, crew cab xlt with 4x4, 108k miles and they are asking 12k.. is that a good deal? I want to make sure I’m not over spending. Clean title, overall a great looking truck .. thoughts?

First off, welcome to the forum! It’s a great place for f150 owners to ask questions about problems you may run into or just out of curiosity. As well as a place to show off our trucks..

There are many much more experienced on this forum than I, but I figured I’d lend a hand since I’ve owned 2 f150s and say I LOVE THEM. Are you looking at the 5.4 liter or the 4.6?

For a 2004 that's not bad mileage at all, I'd say that's a good deal. I personally have the 5.4 a haven't had really any problems.. but wih anything you buy there's always someone that gets the bad end of the stick, so I'd just see if they have kept all of their maintenance records and make sure they are up to date on the fluids. Hell I’d take it to a mechanics shop if you’re worried.

wow that was a fast response lol. Thanks americanford89. Went and test drove it, seems like it runs fine.. makes a ticking noise though. Very slight but it's there. Is that common?

5.4 and ticking......uh oh. Could be cam phasers, about a $2,000 job. Or it could be noisy VCT solenoids or fuel injectors. The VCT solenoids and injectors are a much easier fix. Are any maintenance records included? Seems a fair price for the miles though.

Where are you located? Around here i would say that is asking too much for a 10 year old truck. I'd offer $7-8K and plan to put about $1-2K into it between maintenance issues and the timing system.

I guess I'm not sure how to explain it. It's almost like a faint ticking.. I don't hear it when I'm in the cab, just when i'm near the engine and the hood is closed.

i'm located in California. Craigslist has many for sale with higher mileage asking more $$. My brother-in-law has one and says they tend to hold their value.

Exactly! The notorious ticking noise. If it's super loud and you can hear it almost in the cab, I'd look into taking it to a mechanic before you purchase. Or I'd just offer him low and expect to spend some $$. Buying and replacing your cam ph. are not cheap.

Yes, definitely take it to a mechanic, one you can trust and get their opinion on the ticking.
