Looking to buy an 04-08. Should I avoid the 5.4 all together?

Default Looking to buy an 04-08. Should I avoid the 5.4 all together?

Hey guys how are ya.

I'm new here and have generally been a GM truck guy. We have a baby on the way so I'm looking to get into a supercrew F-150. I've always loved the exterior styling and fords interiors with the console shift are pretty appealing.

Our budget is going to put us in the 04-08 range but I'm nervous about the triton 5.4.

I've been reading that the 04/05 are the worst. Did ford resolve this in 06?

Any info you guys could share would be much appreciated. My dream f-150 would be a white FX4 supercrew w/blk leather.

Thanks in advance.

Generally, many 07's dont have the cam phaser issues that the 04-05's had. I would look for a late build 07 or any 08 should be fine. Most all 08's had the issue with broken plugs resolved, you can tell if the COP boot is brown.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the "new" edition as well as goodluck on a purchase of your F150.

My 08 had a whole timing job and phasers with 60k on it. Late build 08 with brown cops

^^Sounds like someone didnt keep fresh oil in it or use a filter with an anti-drain back valve.......the brown cops had nothing to do with phasers and timing though, it was information to let him know that it should have cured the nightmare of breaking plugs on an 08. Sorry if my post was confusing.

From what i've read its a crap shoot if you will have a cam phaser issue. Now for some hate... i would say if you don't look for a 5.4 you would be stupid. I like the 4.6, but a 4.6 sohc i don't think is enough motor for these trucks especially with a lift and bigger tires.

I have a 4.6 with a programmer and love it I'll agree stock it couldn't get out of its own way but add an edge evo to it and exhaust your good to go and don't have to worry about the issues of the 5.4 however if the OP wants an 4wd I'd recommend the bigger engine
