A metal intake will heat soak and cause a raise in IAT over a plastic one. I have seen as much as a 25 degree difference.

Now these are my personal experiences. IF someone else has different then please post them up.
You have a sensitive butt; most folks (at least myself) would not "feel" a 15 HP increase. Seeing it on a dyno yes; "feeling it", well that's up for debate.

Bucko, The seat of the pants feal is not the 15hp gain. Like NGM said, thats accross the whole powerband. The seat of your pants feel is the power kicking in faster when you put your foot in it. That's throttle response time you feel, not so much the extra HP you feel.

NGM, A 13hp gain with just the CAI is REALLY impressive. What kind of added gain over that did you get with the Tuner?

So, bottom line, who makes the best air intake? I've seen open ones, closed ones, metal, and plastic. I know nothing. Therefore, I cannot make an informed decision. Someone please spoon feed the idiot here.

Another thing, does driving through torrential down pours affect this thing?

It's going to be preference. The S&B is a very good one, but alot of people complain about it's drone. AF1 3" is also good, but they just went under so that's up to you. Great deals on em probably, no chance of customer service down the line. The Volant is also supposed to be good.
Avoid metal tubed ones. As for rain downpoor?? I have a ramair hood and an open air AFE Stage 2 CAI and was tearing it up in the rain and mud a while back and there was not even a spot in the airbox at all.

I have a CAI thats ported to the front wheel well of a mazda miata and I've never had issues driving through deep puddles with it or driving durring a downpour. The car is almost completely blind from water thrown up so its not something I do often in the maiata. In order to completely hydrolock your intake system you'd need to submerge your airfilter to the point where it could no longer draw air in. Even getting SOME water in the Fuel/air mixture is not a problem. It's when you choke off the air all together that issues arise. If you plan on driving in conditions that will submerge the engine bay you should get a snorkle.

You'll have to read the dozens of threads that pop up on this subject each and every month (and to continue no doubt) and make your oun conclusion. There is no way for anyone to (here at least) to say which is best; onlu opinions, which you can conclude one yourself.

I want to say the tuner was like a 12 or 15 hp gain. Again not alot but the drivability and overall performance was defiantly noticeable.
