Someone prolly used it as a plow truck. When you put a plow on a truck. All the things you mentioned go bad fast

The tranny issue you mentioned might be tied to the plugs and cops..

Fix those and your tranny might be OK. The plates on the LSD probably could use a cheap bottle of friction modifier before you designate them for a replacement.. If you do replace them, get som TRU Trac's! They are not unreasonably priced!! Its a good time to re-gear too if you open the diffs for service.

The timing system is likely due for a rebuild, so there is no avoiding that. Sorry update the solenoids and run 5w-30 for longevity..

The suspension could be a cracked leaf spring, coil, strut, bushings on the struts/shocks, or maybe the stabilizer bar and end links..

All of these are fixable in under an hour with proper tools. With a rough estimate of 3k in parts, you could be sitting with a solid truck, after a bit of "elbow grease" of course. That includes tru trac's, timing rebuild, shocks on all 4 and array of bushings you say you may need..

Yeah, It sure sucks to not get a truck that's mint, especially after you "thought" you did.. But honestly, every truck is a money pit.. If you don't throw the time and money at them gradually, then will just ask for it later in one lump sum..

I hate to say it though, as soon as you pass the buck on the labor to a mechanic, you are basically setting yourself up for a bit of pain.. You might want to consider using the money you would have spent on labor in another way.

Buying tools, renting a shelter or paying a handy friend to help you out are all better investments. Not to mention the knowledge and skill garnered from experience might make the whole ordeal just a little bit worth it..
This is all great advice. Thank you.

The guy I took it to has spent the last day and a half fighting with the warranty company trying to get them to pay for all of the repairs. If he's successful I could be looking at as little as $500 for new plugs/COPs, transmission flush and pan drop/filter change, new clutches in the rear diff, new cats, new tensioning system, cam phaser repair, and all the other fixes that need to be done. I'd be happy with that. Way better than the quote the last guy gave me.

If that fails, I would definitely much rather buy the parts and do the work myself. I have a second vehicle I can drive, and I've been dying to get under my truck and do some work. If money was no object I'd be doing it anyways regardless of the warranty.

Hell I'm tempted to tell him to just let me do the transmission work, but he said he was going to do some testing to make sure it was still good before he gave it back.

I hate not having more experience working on my truck!

So do it yourself. You will never have a better chance to get this experience.
Or, let the mechanic do what is immediately necessary and the take on the rest yourself.
You have another vehicle, you have good support from the guys here.
When completed, you will have a great truck, good knowledge and a new respect for what you can accomplish.

Well, after fighting with the warranty company for two days and finally being told by the warranty company that there was no coverage on the truck, I took it back to the dealership and had a very "energetic" conversation with them.

In the end, they put new coverage on it, are having the work done at the local Ford dealership, and are paying all deductibles/co-pays for the work being done, and put me in a rental free of charge.

The best part was that I told them that the mileage was DEFINITELY higher than what they represented the truck as having when I bought it, and they argued tooth and nail that it was accurate. Upon telling their mechanic the issues that it has, he goes "yah, typical ford, what's it got, 160, 170k?" right in front of the GM that just argued the truck only had 84K on it when I bought it. I got a good chuckle out of watching him eat crow a little.

Anyways, If this goes the way the guy promised, I'll be left with a tune-up (plugs and COPs), a transmission pan-drop and filter change, and a brake job left to do on my own dime, all of which I will definitely be tackling on my own, and I feel like that's a fair deal for both of us.

None of the work really worries me aside from the transmission pan drop, I'm still a little hazy on the procedure for getting the transmission fluid drained appropriately after reading several how-to's on the matter. I've really only worked on two-cycle motors before, so this is definitely a whole new realm for me.

I'm glad the dealership is working things out... I just wish it went that way for me when I got into a battle with mine lol. Anyhow, best of luck!

Talked with the guy at the dealership to get an update, he said the warranty company doesn't usually cover tear-down and diagnosis, only replacement, so he's absorbing that cost for me to get the truck torn down and diagnosed (I'm assuming then that his mechanic agrees with my diagnosis).

Last I heard the mechanic had diagnosed several issues and they were just waiting on the warranty company representative to come out and approve the work.

Still hoping this turns out as well as the GM at the dealership promised me it would, and it this point it looks like it will.

These failures still have my truck. After two and a half weeks I finally find out that the Ford dealership that is doing the work for the Toyota dealership I bought the truck from didn't have the truck torn down enough for the warranty inspector, who of course denied the claim because he couldn't see anything. Then the Ford dealership straight up lied to the Toyota dealership and said the warranty company denied the work straight up.

If I don't get my truck back by the end of this week, somebody's head is going to roll. BS from not one but TWO dealerships. UGH.

Yeah, this is painful to read Cutless. I bought my 05fx4 in Nov of 2013 from my friend's sister who needed some cash. I gave her my Frontier Nismo with 260K on it and $10K. She got a truck and I got a lifted F150 that I really wanted instead of the Nismo in 05 with 100K on it. Ford was clean, but needed a few things I new about, my truck was beat but solidly maintained by myself. I knew it would go 300K plus. I immediately replaced a bad ball joint, front shock spherical bearings (procomp shocks), rear shocks. I felt slight hesitation at OD shift point, low rpm so I had tranny inspected and fluid filter change. No problem found. Hesitation continued and got worse. I could drive around it, turn off OD, dont let rpm fall and hang at 1500 or less at freeway speeds. I wondered about the gearing and my 35 inch tires so I got a hypertech tuner and magnaflow cat back system and did accel coils and motorcfraft plugs in a weekend. For two weeks it was perfect. I was confident I fixed the hesitation, loved the exhaust sound and added pickup from the lower shift points. The on the way home from work one night I felt the rumble strip feeling going uphill, CEL came on and I lost most of the power. I was down to 30 in the right lane and limped home with at least one cyl coming back on. Once the grade flattened out the light went off and I regained some power but I knew I had big problems. My code reader showed misfire on cyl 5. I check coil and plug. Tested good. All of my old coils tested 5 too. That was a waste of money. Local big Ford dealer charges me $130 and says you need a new long block. Timing chains slapping, low compression on 5 even though they cant give me a reading. Said they replaced injector 5 under ext warranty as it was stuck open. I take the truck to a local shop. they find 160 psi on cyl 5 and no pulse on cyl 5 injector. Who you take it too matters. Yup, the timing chain cam phaser and solenoid issue is a big problem with these trucks. Even at 84K I could see it. My truck has 112K on it now and it has sounded like a diesel pretty much since I got it. Loud tires etc kept me from focusing on it at first. I knew the injectors made some noise too but I knew that maybe the engine needed some attention. I use mobil 1 5/20. Good luck with the warranty outcome. I am hoping for a simple fix with my wire harness to get cyl 5 working again. Guessing and buying a new computer seems just stupid.
