I recently bought a new F150 Lariat 4x4 with an open rear and it's driving me nuts since I can get stuck in an inch of snow in 2wd. I'm posting this here rather than the 09-11 category since I figure I'm likely to find more people here that have experience with both. Also, there haven't been any major changes in the 9.75" axle since they came out. I'm just looking for opinions on either the Ford LS or the Detroit Truetrac. Every vehicle I've had in the past has had a standard LS and I've been happy with them, it just sounds like the Truetrac may be even better. But I am concerned about driveability problems and/or failure of the Truetrac. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

both are decent units but the true trac is better IMO (both of them are limited slip units BTW) the ford trac-loc uses clutch discs to control the power transfer to the tire thats loosing traction and they wear out after time, the tru-trac uses helical gears to achieve the transfer instead of a clutch so there is not as much to wear out. the bias ratio is better with the tru-trac too.

+1 for the Truetracs. No clutches to wear out. Pretty much bullet-proof.

I have a Detroit Truetrac in my 1989 Chevy Caprice, which has a stout 420hp small block. In my opinion, it is the best value out there. You get the ability to turn a corner and manuever, but when you stand on it, it locks both sides instantly. I've had it 'lock' on me when I come around a corner a little fast, and the tires will chirp, or the car will kick loose a little bit, but honestly, I am very pleased with its performance. +1 for the Truetrac.
