Limited slip rear end

RAY H said it best. If you're thinking a factory limited slip is gonna change much, You'll be disappointed. They help a little, but not alot, and they wear out really quick. The True trac is definitely the best option for you, but they run over $600 by the time you get new bearings, races and shims.
As far as the setup, it's not that bad. You do have to set the proper carrier (ring gear) backlash, but if you do that, the pattern will take care of itself, since your pinion settings won't be changed at all.
Take a look at the Powertrax Lockrite, or the NO-SLIP locker. The no-slip is a full locker with pretty decent road manners. I have one in a Ranger. It installs right in the factory differential carrier, and takes about an hour. And it's less than $300.

+1. The extra cash you'd spend on a Detroit TrueTrac would be well spent in your case. You'll see significant improvement over an OEM LS. Cost-wise, you should be able to pick up a TrueTrac for about $470 then add in another $100 for misc parts and new gear oil and then local labor. If you have a 4WP store around then I'd check with them.
Vano - sorry man, but I can't go with your 2x/4x comparison. Even with a TrueTrac and 37" MTs on mine I stand zero change of getting up my driveway in the winter using 2x once the snow and ice packs in. I try every once in a while, end up getting stuck half way and then switch to 4x. 2x trucks are great in moderate climates, but around here they get parked most the winter.

My truck has ls and its pretty much worthless. I have been momentarily stuck in my front yard, just spinning one wheel it was embarrassing. And my yard is flat and at the time it was wet. I'm spending my yearly bonus on some sort of locker or aggressive ls, plus a few other things. I would never waste my time or money to put a factory ls in its only good for doing burnouts or pulling something on level surfaces. My ls is about the only grip I have about my truck.

The video was good, except for the fact that the truck with the locker hit the rollers 2x as fast as the others, kinda ruined the even testing. A selectable locker is the way to go, though a good working LS will get you through a lot. Open diffs are retarded and should be outlawed.
Personally, I'm looking at getting a LS/selectable for my front axle also, and eventually upgrading my rear LS for a locker.

Believe it or not, but there's a reason why some will pay extra for an LSD. It will always be a compromise, whatever you do. Find out what you really need and then get the right diff etc.
Spinning one wheel with a limited slip either means one of the wheels is stuck too much, like in hard concrete, or you have burned up your diff or dont even have one.
Non-ls vs ls is a big difference.

I know i have said this before, but I highly recommend the Auburn Auto Cross Locker. This true locker was designed for street racing, so even though it is an all time locker, it releases some tension in turning situations allowing the outer tire to roll the extra length is needed so you arent barking around corners. I am not sure if they make this diff for the 9" but they do make it for the 8.8 (thats what i have). I love this diff and have been so glad that I chose this than any other. It ran me just over $400 but i highly recommend it to any 2WD truck.
