Leaky Differential
Hey guys,
I was under the truck today and I saw the bottom half of my differential looks wet. It feels a little greasy, too.
Has anyone seen this before? '08 Screw 150k miles. Never actually had it "leak" on the ground anywhere. Put Royal Purple in it at 100k but never removed the cover just sucked it out and put it back in through the 3/8 plug on the side.
Trying to see if anyone knows the cause or has had this happen to them

Yah, you just need to reseal the diff.. you should of done it when you did a fluid swap it's easy.
pull cover off scrap old RTV off put new RTV on let it get tacky bolt it back up

Sometimes leaks will occur when a hydraulic jack is placed there to lift both wheels off the ground at the same time. Personally, I guess that I have been lucky because I have done that before but it can cause leaks. Pull the cover, clean real good, reseal with RTV and refill. Don't forget the friction modifier if your diff needs it.

I would check the pinion seal. Mine looked like that and it had a slow leak from the pinion seal. It's hard to tell from the picture of the back of the diff. but I would look on the front side and see if it's wet also. Plus it's a hell of a lot cheap then pulling your cover off and losing all your fluid.

Expensive and has a smell that you will never forget. I removed my cover and filled with new, which I think is a pain in the butt with the fill plug and laying on your back. Did it in the summer and noticed a few drops in my drive last week and saw it was leaking from the top. I rigged it with more RTV until I feel like doing it again. Anyway, good luck and Im sure you know to fill it with the truck on level ground.

Check the pinion seal.
Pull the cover and drain it. You can't see any chunks or sludge when you just suck it out the fill hole.
