Default Key in ignition kills battery in off position

2004 F150 xlt with 5.4. Battery holds a charge fine when no key in it, but if I leave key in the ignition, in the off position, battery dies in just a few minutes.

Any ideas?

I have an '05 Lariat Screw and yesterday truck started just fine to go to work, at lunch I started it to move it into a shaded spot to eat my lunch started fine. After 5 pm when leaving work battery dead. Battery is 84 month O'reilly's which is 3 years one month old. Checked the water levels when I got home and though they were off the top mark and total across all the cells probably took about 3 turkey basters of distilled water.

I put my Optimate 4 battery tender which I use for my motorcycle and it read 'Save' to start with overnight its now on charge. Hopefully I won't have to buy another $140 battery...

Why are you leaving the key in the ignition in the first place? If it only takes a few minutes for your battery to die, I'd also suggest a new battery. It may be on its last leg and sitting for a few may be to much for it to handle.

I replaced a 3 year old 84 month battery yesterday. Sucked having to spend $80 on the prorate but all seems well now.

I was going to x2 techrep..... your battery sounds like it is near it's end. I had one where if I left the dome light on for 2 minutes I couldn't start the truck (you may want to test this). Leaving the key in the ignition might be keeping the computer awake and drawing more power. I'm not 100% sure on that but there is a keysense line as I've used it for other things (and for the door chime of course ).
